Chapter 6

Life is Hard

Monday rolled around just like it always did. Barbara wasn’t ready for it to be here. Carl had called to give everyone the report on Betty. She was holding her own, but was still in a lot of pain from the blood leakage in her leg. They were back in Bowling Green and the cardiologist had scheduled the surgery to put the pacemaker in for 8:00am Tuesday morning.

Barbara talked to her Dad about going to All County Band. He told her to do whatever she wanted to do. She had given the idea a lot of thought and she didn’t see how she could go. She wanted to go. She knew it would be lots of work, but she thought it would be fun too. She had her job at the stables as well as her responsibilities at home. Maybe she would be picked to go another year.

After band, Barbara stayed and talked to Mr. Brown. She told him about her Mom, her job and her decision.

“Who, besides me, are you thinking of sending?” asked Barbara.

“David Reynolds on saxophone and Jim Mott on Trombone.” answered Mr. Brown.

“Can I suggest someone as a possible replacement for me?” she asked.

“You can name someone, but I may not agree with you. Who would you pick?”

“Sally Stokes. She plays as good as I do. She has never been either. I think she would be a great person to represent our school.” replied Barbara.

“I’ll give your choice some thought. I hope your Mom gets along okay. You sure are a busy girl.” said Mr. Brown.

“It keeps me out of trouble. I may be absent tomorrow. Mom is having another surgery and I may stay home with my grandmother. Thanks a lot Mr. Brown. Goodbye.” said Barbara.

Seventh period was finally over. Barbara hurried home. Grams was in her room listening to the radio. Mariah was lying by her chair. Mariah got up to greet Barbara when she came in.

“Has Dad called, Grams?”

“No. He will probably call later when he knows all of you are home.”

“Has Mariah been out lately?”

“Not since this morning.”

“I’m going to take her out then. I’ll be back in a little while.”

Barbara put her things in her room, got Mariah’s leash and they left. “You must have a huge bladder girl. I didn’t forget to give you water in your bowl this morning did I?”

They went behind the store where there was an open field. Barbara took the leash off and Mariah began her routine of sniffing everything in sight.

I bet Mom is nervous about tomorrow. She has always said that she hoped she never had to have surgery. She doesn’t even like to go to the hospital to visit anyone. She doesn’t like hospitals very much.

Barbara heard someone call her name. She turned around and saw Cathy Farmer, a friend from school. She lived out in the country.

“What are you doing in town? Didn’t you ride the bus home?” asked Barbara.

“No. My Mom is coning to town to pick up something at your store for Dad so she said I could wait for her here,” said Cathy.
